This article concerns the degrees of the University of Oxford. The system of academic degrees in the University of Oxford can be confusing to those not familiar with it. This is not merely because many degree titles date from the Middle Ages, but also because many changes have been haphazardly introduced in recent years. For example, the (medieval) B.D., B.M., B.C.L., etc., are postgraduate degrees, while the (modern) M.Phys., M.Eng., etc., are undergraduate degrees.

In postnominals, "University of Oxford" is normally abbreviated "Oxon.", which is short for (Academia) Oxoniensis: e.g. M.A. (Oxon.), although within the university itself the abbreviation "Oxf" is now officially preferred.

University of Cambridge & University of Oxford : Foundation Degrees/Courses?
Q. Do the top universities offer foundation courses (like Bristol, Manchester does)? It's when the student leaves a year early (16-17 years old) to join the University and gain a background information and then enter in the course at the university.
Asked by asiabunny - Sun Jul 6 11:38:00 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, they don't. You have to remember that Oxford and Cambridge receive applications for more than 3 times the number of places they have, all from very bright people. With this many people to choose from there is no need to offer places to anyone other than those who are already fully capable. Therefore, there is no need for them to run foundation courses.
