The University of Oxford (informally Oxford University, or simply Oxford), located in the English city of Oxford, is the oldest surviving university in the English-speaking world and is regarded as one of the world's leading academic institutions. Although the exact date of foundation remains unclear, there is evidence of teaching there as far back as the 11th century. The University grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. In post-nominals the University of Oxford is typically abbreviated as Oxon. (from the Latin Oxoniensis), although Oxf is sometimes used in official publications.

After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge, where they established what became the University of Cambridge. The two "ancient universities" have many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge. In addition to cultural and practical associations as a historic part of British society, the two universities have a long history of rivalry with each other.

Most undergraduate teaching at Oxford is organised around weekly essay-based tutorials at self-governing colleges and halls, supported by lectures and laboratory classes organised by University faculties and departments. League tables consistently list Oxford as one of the UK's best universities, and Oxford consistently ranks in the world's top 10. The University is a member of the Russell Group of research-led British universities, the Coimbra Group, the League of European Research Universities, International Alliance of Research Universities and is also a core member of the Europaeum. For more than a century, it has served as the home of the Rhodes Scholarship, which brings students from a number of countries to study at Oxford as postgraduates.

What is required to an International student applying for the PPE course at Oxford University?
Q. I'm Italian and I'd like to know what are the criteria of admission at the PPE course at Oxford University. I achieved Trinity exam grade ISE II (is that enough to frequent Oxford?).I cannot figure out the equivalents of the qualifications written in the official site of the University. Please don't just leave the link to the site of Oxford! Thank you in advance!

What are the chances of a 26-year-old American male transferring to Oxford University?
Q. I have some college coursework finished at a private university and a junior college. I understand I'm a little older, but I have scores that can speak for themselves. I'm also married with a 13-month-old daughter; I wonder if that will be a factor. And does Oxford even accept under-graduate transfer students (hard to believe, but I'm curious nonetheless).

A. To be honest, I went to Oxford and in my whole 3 years there I never heard of anyone transferring there from another university either in this country or abroad. The courses at Oxford are of such a high standard that it's very unlikely that the necessary level of work will have been covered at any previous university to bring you in line with that which your fellow students at Oxford would have covered (the top Ivy Leagues may be an exception to this). Coming from America, it might also be a little trickier as you guys study a range of subjects at university and then 'major' and 'minor' in two, whereas we only study one (sometimes two subjects) for the whole of the time that we're at university and so you may also not have covered your… [cont.]

What do Oxford university think of sociology?
Q. I really want to drop English, as I know I am not good at it, but if I meet the entry requirements towards Oxford based on History, Economics and Sociology, is Sociology considered at Oxford, or will they exlude that? Even if I get AAA I want to do Law and like I said English I am really poor at, even though Oxford want GCSE Maths if you want to study Law, which I got an A in

A. With a standard of English grammar as poor as yours, I feel you are being somewhat ambitious thinking that you'll get to study anything at Oxford. Aim your sights a little lower. Have you thought about studying in the USA for example.
