The University of Oxford (informally Oxford University, or simply Oxford), located in the English city of Oxford, is the oldest surviving university in the English-speaking world and is regarded as one of the world's leading academic institutions. Although the exact date of foundation remains unclear, there is evidence of teaching there as far back as the 11th century. The University grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. In post-nominals the University of Oxford is typically abbreviated as Oxon. (from the Latin Oxoniensis), although Oxf is sometimes used in official publications. After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge, where they established what became the University of Cambridge. The two "ancient universities" have many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge. In addition to cultural and practical associations as a historic part of British society, the two universities have a long history of rivalry with each other. Most undergraduate teaching at Oxford is organised around weekly essay-based tutorials at self-governing colleges and halls, supported by lectures and laboratory classes organised by University faculties and departments. League tables consistently list Oxford as one of the UK's best universities, and Oxford consistently ranks in the world's top 10. The University is a member of the Russell Group of research-led British universities, the Coimbra Group, the League of European Research Universities, International Alliance of Research Universities and is also a core member of the Europaeum. For more than a century, it has served as the home of the Rhodes Scholarship, which brings students from a number of countries to study at Oxford as postgraduates. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License I want to get into miami university oxford campus? Q. I don't think I have the grades to get in. If I went to one of the branch schools either middletown or hamilton could I transfer over? Im also from out of state Asked by johnny - Wed Jan 14 17:26:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. That is an option, but also, Miami University, like most other colleges, have a higher acceptance rates for transfer students, than they do for students attending right out of high school. So you might consider going to an in state school for one year, then applying the next year. Another way to get in is to take a year and join the Peace Corps or Americorps, and reapply with "experience." This has become a popular option for those students who have a definite school they want to enter, and aren't willing to compromise. Q. Hello, I'm currently 13 years old.. And I would love to pursue my dreams in obtaining my PH.D from Oxford University... I know the grades I have right now won't directly reflect the grades I will have in college but... I currently am attending 8th grade; school starts tomorrow for me! I am commisioner of my ASB squad, I currently hold a 4.0 average...I belong in the national Junior Honor society... Will mantaining this G.P.A. be difficult for me... Will school ever be too overwhelming for me? Will school ever, be sooo overwhelming to the point where I won't be able to catch up? And thus, will create my 4.0 average to drop down? I'm scared... I need answers... Asked by haha - Wed Sep 5 15:30:41 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. First of all, relax. You don't necessarily need a 4.0 in order to get into the top schools. You need passion and drive - which you obviously have. So... breathe. :grins: Second, by the time you get to looking at PhD programs, Oxford may not be the top of your list. That's because, for PhD programs, the reputation of the program, of the department itself, trumps the reputation of the school as a whole. So you'll be picking the department with the best possible reputation in your field, rather than the university. Also know that, except in certain fields, the strongest PhD programs tend to... shh... be in the US. But that doesn't mean that you can't study at Oxford, either as part of your undergraduate studies or for a Master's degree.… [cont.] Answered by RoaringMice - Wed Sep 5 16:52:23 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "university of oxford" Video Course: New Headway Elmentary Episode 2 - To the Rescue -
